Plantar Warts

There are a few things you can do to help prevent warts:

1. Avoid directly touching a wart on yourself or someone else.
2. Do not walk around barefoot. Always wear at least socks or flip flops
(especially in public showers, locker rooms, gym floors, public pools etc.)
3. Change your socks daily.
4. Check your and your children’s feet periodically.
5. Keep your feet dry and clean.

How are plantar warts treated?

The treatment of warts depends on the size and the number of warts present. It usually consists of a blistering agent that is applied to the wart right in our office. Within about 24 hours of the treatment, a blister will begin to form under the wart. This kills the wart by cutting off it’s blood supply. Several treatments, usually spaced by approximately 10-14 days, may be necessary to completely kill the virus. There are several other treatment options that are available such as freezing. Our Chiropodist will determine which treatment option is best for you.

A wart or verruca is a growth on the skin caused by a virus that gets into the skin through small cuts or scrapes. They can be found anywhere on the foot, and are quite common. Plantar warts are covered with callus tissue and found growing inward on the bottom of the foot. They are usually gray or brown and have black small, black dots in the center. A wart can often be confused with a corn as it looks almost identical, but a Chiropodist can differentiate them. A wart can be quite painful and is highly contagious. If left untreated, they will grow bigger, multiply or spread to other people.
